The potential for a resilient Blue Future is not limited by a lack of solutions but by the gap between existing innovations and their effective application.
MAR FUTURA Foundation works to close this gap by making innovations actionable—empowering coastal communities to monitor their marine areas through low-cost technology, facilitating decision-making at all levels of governance with accessible tools, and strengthening public participation by reducing barriers to information access. Beyond technology, MAR FUTURA focuses on building the enabling conditions that ensure these innovations endure and scale for lasting impact
Mission
To implement innovative, strategic, and interdisciplinary solutions to transform ocean monitoring, governance, and public participation— building the foundations for a sustainable Blue Future.
Vision
A resilient Blue Future where a healthy ocean supports the long-term prosperity of humanity, balancing conservation and sustainable use through a redesigned human relationship with the ocean that allows both people and nature to thrive together.
Our Operating Principles

Technology and Innovation
We take a pragmatic approach to technology: we identify needs and address them with solutions, innovating on existing low-cost, scalable solutions.
Local Capacities
We strengthen local capacities as a structural condition for the success of our projects. We work with communities, authorities, and key stakeholders to ensure that those who use the technologies are able to operate them, enabling solutions to be maintained, adapted, and evolved over time without external dependency.
Governance
We strengthen governance by ensuring that data translates into action. We co-design operational and response protocols with national authorities and coastal communities so that information is verified, documented, and triggers formal procedures. In this way, technology not only generates evidence, but also reinforces institutional capacity to make decisions and act in a timely and effective manner.
Dissemination and Scalability
We promote the dissemination and scalability of our solutions through an open-access approach. We release software, hardware schematics, and technical documentation to facilitate replication and adaptation beyond pilot sites.
What we do: three paths to change
MAR FUTURA's work is channeled through three integrated strategic pathways. We work to ensure that data is seamlessly integrated into governance, and that governance is seamlessly integrated into public action.

1. Monitoring the ocean in real-time
Effective ocean management faces a critical challenge: data on human uses and ecosystem dynamics are rarely, if ever, available when decisions need to be made. Our goal is to close this gap by implementing innovative solutions that monitor and deliver real-time data to those who need it.

2. Facilitating decision-making
To build a future that balances human prosperity and conservation, we need responsible, timely, and inclusive decision-making. With limited resources and information, increasing the positive impact of decisions requires synthesizing complex data into accessible tools that support institutions, from local fishing cooperatives to government agencies.
3. Democratizing information and participation
A resilient ocean future depends on collective ownership. Management decisions cannot be effective unless the people who live near and depend on the sea are informed, engaged, and have a voice in the process. To this end, reducing barriers to accessing information and fostering citizen participation are essential to ensuring that data and policies are accessible to all, thereby promoting participation in the responsible management of the oceans.
